Supporting men’s mental health through barbering

We believe the barber chair isn’t just a place for a trim, it’s a safe space where men can be open and honest. Follow us as we embark on our journey to empower barbers across the country to support men’s mental wellbeing.

With nearly 15 years of experience in the male grooming industry, I’ve had the privilege of engaging in countless conversations with men, children, pensioners, and teenagers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Through these interactions, and reflecting on my own journey with mental health, I’ve come to appreciate the significant role barbers play in supporting men’s mental well-being.

When men visit a barber shop, they carve out time from their busy schedules for self-care. The power of conversation in this setting can have a profound impact, offering an opportunity for men to express worries or concerns that they might otherwise keep bottled up. They often leave feeling refreshed, revitalised, and relieved, as if a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.

Recognising this, InsideOut was born, inspired to enhance the male grooming environment by developing communities and hubs for mental health support within our industry.

What is it, and who is it for?

This course is specifically designed to reflect the unique conversations and atmosphere of a barber shop, equipping barbers with the necessary knowledge, tools, conversation skills, education, support, and sign-posting abilities. This course is for barbers and those working in a similar industry with wellbeing at the centre.

What will I learn?

The course will prepare barbers to recognise and respond to moments when customers express deep thoughts or make seemingly casual comments that may be cries for help. It will be constructed from feedback from barbers and customers, and by observing conversations in various barber shops to understand their natural flow. This comprehensive approach aims to create the most effective training scheme, which we plan to roll out across the United Kingdom.

How much will it cost?

The course is free, and will take approximately one day to complete. All proceeds will go towards funding InsideOut’s mission of eridacating the stigma around men’s mental health.
